Nothing to See Here: CBS, PBS Skip Dem ID for Sex Abuse Allegations Against Liberal Mayor

Time for another edition of Name That Party! Seattle’s liberal Democrat Mayor Ed Murray resigned on Tuesday after five people accused him of sex abuse. Unsurprisingly, CBS and PBS avoided identifying the progressive politician as a Democrat. Today co-host Savannah Guthrie, however described him as a “Democrat” and “vocal critic of Donald Trump.”

On CBS This Morning, co-host Charlie Rose on Wednesday avoided mentioning ideology:

The Seattle Times reports on the resignation of Seattle Mayor Ed Murray over child sexual abuse allegations. Murray’s resignation came after a cousin accused Murray of molesting him decades ago when he was only 13-years old. Four other man have accused Murray of molesting them when they were teenagers. Murray has denied the allegations.

On the PBS NewsHour, Tuesday, John Yang similarly skipped party ID:

Seattle Mayor Ed Murray has announced he is resigning after five men accused him of sexual abuse going back decades. He denied the allegations, but said he does not want the issue to hinder the public’s business. Murray’s first term as mayor expires at year’s end.

Wonder what would have happened if Murray had been a conservative Republican?

In contrast, it was left to Today’s Guthrie to identify Murray’s political affiliation:

Seattle’s Mayor Ed Murray is resigning after a fifth man, his younger cousin, accused him of sexually abusing him decades ago. Murray has denied all of the allegations but said on Tuesday he’s stepping down so that his personal issues do not interfere with the city business. The 62-year-old Democrat was Seattle’s first openly gay mayor. He’s been a strong supporter of LGBTQ rights and vocal critic of President Trump. His resignation takes effect later today and the city council president will take over as Seattle’s mayor.
